Southside Filmmakers Screening and Award with Filmmakers Q&A (cert 15)**UPDATE: winner of the inaugural Best Southside Film Award was Echoes of Cinema City**

In April the Southside Film Festival invited Southside Filmmakers to submit films to the festival for selection in this screening. The selection includes The Neighbours, Cinemaorganphiles, The Phantom Betty, In the Snack Bar, Jim’s Dookit, You Always Think There is Nothing There, The Day That We Got Married, Lights, Camera, Action! and The Sundancer: The Alarm Clock Song.
The audience will be asked to vote for their favourite film and the winner will receive the inaugural Best Southside Film Award. All films are eligible for the inaugural Best Southside Film Award and the prizes which include:
- Bafta Scotland offered two tickets to the BAFTA in Scotland Interview this year at EIFF
- Screen Academy Scotland, a Skillset Film & Media Academy, has offered 40% off Apple Accredited Introduction to Final Cut Pro 101 course 1-3 August, 2011 (usually £797 now £478)
- Glasgow Media Access Centre (GMAC) has offered 1 year free membership to GMAC and 1 weekend free hire of shooting kits (Sony Z5, tripod, boom, mic and cables) at a convenient time for GMAC.
- Dinner for 2 at the Tea Room, Butterfly & Pig and 2 Guest list places for Buff Club, kindly donated by The Shed.
- 2 Guest list places for a gig of your choice at the Gigs at the Glasshouse. Kindly donated by Southside Festival. All gigs listed on website

The video was shot over three days around Glasgow’s southside and westend on a very low budget and tells the story of a hopeful young couple who meet, fall in love and get married. But too much drinking and spinning at the wedding party makes things become blurry for the groom. Like a lot of marriages, love, hope and laughter soon turns into blood, sweat and slaughter.
Glaswegian Simone Smith has always had a passion for filmmaking. From the age of ten she was holding a camera making mock horror films and slap-stick commercials with her sisters, brother and friends. In 2006 she became a VJ (visual jockey) – projecting self-designed motion graphics on the walls of Scotland’s top clubs and music festivals, and in 2008 she earned a full-time position at BBC Scotland as a content maker for Learning and New Media. Outside work, Simone is following her filmmaking dream, making music videos and writing short films.
2008 saw the formation of Scottish band The Raw Kings. The band quickly booked themselves into their local studio and set about creating their unique brand of rock n' roll. The band's members are Scott Wilson - Guitar/lead vocals, Eddie Beggan - Guitar /vocals, David Jackson - Drums, John Beggan - Bass.

At its peak, Glasgow had over 23 fully working cinema organs. Now there is only one. For an entire generation the sound of the cinema was that of the cinema organ and if it wasn’t for the team of volunteers at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall that sound would be lost forever. To understand their passion and their work is to see Glasgow's cinema heritage. Ian McNaught gives us a tour of the organ’s home and how it has been incorporated into the entire building filling it with pipes, machinery and wonderful sounds.
Gordon Ballantyne is an Artist and Director living in the south side of Glasgow in Govanhill. Since graduating from art school he has produced short films, documentaries and paintings. Recently he has been collaborating with the creative urban think-tank - Pidgin Perfect on a film which will formulate part of an exhibition entitled Territory and Place. This is proposed to be showcased in the Briggait Art centre in Summer 2011.
Antonia Bain is a Director and Writer based in the south side of Glasgow in Govanhill. Originally from Edinburgh she moved to Glasgow to work for the Media company 55 Degrees, where she currently works as a Content Director. She has worked on many cultural and educational projects, most notably directing several videos for the new transport museum in Glasgow. She is currently working on a new short film entitled Light Up which will be completed in early 2012.

Adapted from a poem by Edwin Morgan, In the Snack Bar is a tale of the unlikely connection between two outsiders. Will meeting Walter change Stephen’s life?
Iftekhar Gafar is a writer/director based in Kinning Park. In the Snack Bar is Iftekhar’s first commissioned directorial debut. He has worked on An Act of Terror, a BAFTA Scotland New Talent Award nominated feature film as 1st Assistant Director. He was DOP on short film Happy, nominated for First Light Award. He also wrote the First Light short film Last Chance Final Rep.

Two film makers are searching for a heroine with a killer scream for the first ever Asian zombie flick. They cross paths with a femme fatale from down south who unbeknownst to them promises more trouble than running into a bunch of brain munching zombies in a foul mood and fouler breath!
Sarmed Mirza is a BAFTA Scotland New Talent Award nominated film maker and the first Asian to produce a feature (An Act of Terror) in Scotland. This is the first Urdu/Hindi sitcom pilot which he has written, produced, acted in and edited. Sarmed is based in Govanhill.

Adapted from a short story ‘Neighbors’ by Raymond Carver, The Neighbours stars Peter Mullan and Vicky Masson as Ernest and Sheila, a somewhat staid pair, who have settled into a monotonous life. When their new neighbours ask them to feed their cat while they are away, Ernest and Sheila are exposed to a world that brings their own subdued desires to the surface, and changes their lives forever.
David McKay directed the BAFTA award winning television series Tinsel Town, High Times, and My Parents Are Aliens. His previous short films are Caesar, To a Mouse, and Final Warning. David has been an actor for over 26 years and has been in the films My Name Is Joe, Ae Fond Kiss, Once Upon A Time In The Midlands, and Braveheart. He is based in Mount Florida.

The Alarm Clock Song comes from The Sundancer's debut album 5 Miles To Sunrise. The Sundancer is a Scottish singer songwriter who writes uplifting and powerful songs that feed your soul and make you want to dance. The band's members are all Southsiders and are Paul Brunton - Guitar/Vocals, Neil Doherty - Guitar /BV's, Mads Mitchell - Drums, Dave Guild - Bass, Colin Clark - Saxophone.
Daryl Cockburn is a freelance filmmaker and editor based in the Southside of Glasgow.
You Always Think There's Nothing There | Documentary | 20’ | Directed by Chris Bowman & Damned Rebel Bitches
The Damned Rebel Bitches are a self-organised social history group of mature women based in Edinburgh who conduct research into overlooked aspects of women’s history. In You Always Think There’s Nothing There, The Damned Rebel Bitches have set out to recover memories and accounts of poverty that haven’t made the history books, as lived by themselves, their contacts, and the people they came across in making this.
Chris Bowman is a filmmaker, writer and sound designer who also works as a freelance editor and lecturer/tutor. He is based in Pollokshields.
